Prior to joining the Higher Education and Student Affairs faculty at ÍøÆغÚÁÏ in fall 2020, Professor Melvin Whitehead’s postsecondary experience included teaching service-learning and civic engagement courses, advising student organizations, co-leading department and campus-wide assessment initiatives, and collaborating with student affairs colleagues in enhancing support for minoritized college students through programming and outreach. Professor Whitehead’s research explores the legacies of racism in U.S. higher education, with a focus on whiteness and anti-blackness and how they are reproduced on college campuses. Some of his current work focuses on how white college students construct meaning about race and racism and how those processes connect to the marginalizing campus experiences of Black college students at historically white institutions. Professor Whitehead has over ten years of experience teaching courses and facilitating workshops and dialogues about race, whiteness, anti-blackness, diversity, and social justice.
